Welcome To Zambia Federation Of Disability Organisations

Welcome to the Zambia Federation of Disability Organisations (ZAFOD) website! Established in 1985 and officially registered in 1986 under the Zambia Council for the Handicapped, ZAFOD plays a crucial role as a national umbrella organization for Civil Society Organisations dedicated to advocating for the rights of Persons With Disabilities. Our mandate includes promoting and protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, enhancing the capacity of affiliated Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), conducting impactful research for advocacy, and raising awareness about barriers hindering meaningful participation in public life. In 2009, ZAFOD renewed its registration under the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities, aligning with the Disability Act of 1996. Explore our platform for valuable insights, resources, and updates on our collective efforts towards an inclusive and empowered community.

Capacity building

Persons with disabilities are often excluded from public life, not by the impairments they have, but more often by barriers that exist in society, such as attitudinal, environmental and social barriers. Despite the countless laws that have been developed to ensure the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities and ensure their full and effective participation in public life, barriers have continued to hinder full participation and enjoyment of such rights. ZAFOD will engage duty bearers, relevant stakeholders and entire communities, through every advocacy platform available, to lobby for full application of local and international legal instruments so that persons with disabilities are fully included and can freely participate in cultural, social, economic and political activities in their communities. In addition, ZAFOD will lobby for enactment and review of policies that are not disability friendly. ZAFOD will lobby for inclusion of disability issues in all developmental programs so they are not left behind

Advocacy:

In order to strengthen the disability movement and its voice in Zambia and attain the desired outcome of having persons with disabilities enjoy their deserved human rights, dignity and freedoms, Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) need to be strengthened to conduct their business in a professional and accountable manner. ZAFOD is determined to shoulder this huge responsibility of capacity building and providing technical support to all its affiliates and their networks.

Disability Awareness Raising

Negative attitudes affect both community members and persons with disabilities themselves (self stigma). Negative attitudes towards persons with disabilities have significantly hindered progress in the actualisation of human rights and dignity for persons with disabilities. Self stigma entails the inability by persons with disability to demand for services entitled to them. ZAFOD will provide various platforms for right holders to engage with duty bearers and communities to help reverse the negative attitudes affecting the full and effective participation in public life by persons with disabilities.

Research:

In order to effectively influence and advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities, research findings are critical as they provide evidence for existing gaps and real challenges faced by persons with disabilities. ZAFOD will carry out national-wide research and simple surveys, on various thorny disability issues, as perceived by persons with disabilities and as enshrined in legal instruments, as a basis for lobbying, influencing and advocating for policy and legal reforms; to dismantle barriers and promote and protect rights of persons with disabilities.

“We exist to facilitate the unification, capacity building and effective and efficient networking of disability organisations in Zambia as instruments of positive change in the lives of persons with disabilities and in society”..
